diabetes meal plan

During a routine checkup and subsequent blood testing your Doctor informs you that you are now a Type 2 diabetic. Your first reaction is probably an overreaction, a natural response to bad news about your health. Concerns for your future and long-term health are immediately considered. Worry about your family’s welfare and your role in it are also part of the process. If you haven’t already done so, take a deep breath and relax. Diabetes is not a death sentence, it is simply a change of life sentence.

If your diabetes has been diagnosed early, you may be able to control it with your diabetes meal plan and exercise. A blood glucose test kit will let you know daily how you’re doing. If the disease is advanced too far, you will need to take a pill twice a day with your meals and continue testing your blood glucose.

Your diabetes meal plan has to start with the realization that you will need to reduce your intake of starches and sugars. How much carbohydrates you can tolerate will be determined by the results of your glucose tests. There doesn’t seem to be a “one size fits all” meal plan for diabetics. You will need to develop your own plan based on your body’s unique ability to metabolize carbs.

That could actually be good news for you. You may find that although pizza and pasta are fairly high in carbohydrates and would probably be banned from a general diabetic diet, they do not seriously effect your glucose. If you like potatoes and have the right metabolism you may be able to eat them as well. By reading package labels and declining high carb breads, cookies, cakes and candies you will probably be surprised how little your life has actually changed. The fairly recent entry into the market of lower carbohydrate foods is more good news and will allow you to change your diet without really changing your life style.

Unfortunately, many of the low carb foods compensate with higher calory and fats so keep that in mind as well as you read labels. Weight gain makes the disease harder to control. Many diabetics discover that the proper diabetic meal plan will result in reduced weight that in turn allows them to stop their medications.

The key to controlling your diabetes is research, testing and diligence. Properly executed, you will probably be surprised how easy it is to control your disease and how little it has effected your life
